A recent study reveals that 4 people out of 10 believe that marriage has become obsolete. Has marriage become outdated? The Bible continues to teach that "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge." Hebrews 13:4. We have witnessed a rapid decline in the stability of marriage. We see such acceptable practices as divorce, co-habitation, and unwed mothers. In fact, statistics reveal that 41% of child births are to unwed mothers. God's command remains: "I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully." I Timothy 5:14. Children need parents who will love them, provide for them, and give them the guidance which is essential for a well-balanced and well-adjusted life. Many children live in a house where two people are only living together without the commitment of marriage. As a result, many times we see abuse and neglect. The union of marriage was established by Almighty God so that homes could be created. Within that home are to be found the divine ingredients of love, caring, Biblical instruction, and the daily provisions of life.
We behold a society that is described by the prophet Jeremiah in chapter 6 and verse 15. "Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush:..." A picture recently appeared on the cover of a popular magazine of a pregnant woman posing nude. Should we not blush at such a display of sin? People speak and dress in a manner that certainly should cause us to blush, but rarely does. The Bible speaks of the "unfruitful works of darkness done in secret" being shameful to even speak of those things. Ephesians 5:11-12. But our age seems to glorify such acts of indecency and sinfulness. The moral fiber of society seems to have completely eroded. About 60% of our population sees nothing sinful with fornication, which is sexual immortality. Rather than condemnation, we see acceptance. We have even given names of acceptability to many sinful lifestyles. One such lifestyle is the alternative lifestyle, or homosexuality. Some religious groups have become tolerant of this sinful practice. God destroyed a civilization because "the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly." Genesis 13:13. Fornication is a sin whether it be practiced by a prostitute or a priest. We are traveling a path of self destruction. How long will it be before the stench of our immorality reaches the nostrils of God to an intolerable degree?
The Bible describes the Judge of all the earth in Habakkuk 1:13. "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity..." Broken marriages, unwed mothers, cohabiting couples, and all the other immoral practices of an evil generation violate the distinct character of the Holy God.
